Medical education

An e-logbook platform for medical education

ELog: digital logbooks where trainee doctors record cases and procedures and supervisors sign them off.

The challenge

What was in the way.

Trainee doctors must show that they have seen the right cases and performed the right procedures. Many programmes still relied on paper logbooks and spreadsheets, which were easy to lose, slow to sign off and hard for programme directors to review. Supervisors signed entries in batches long after the work was done, and nobody could see at a glance whether a trainee was on track.

What we built

The solution.

ELog, a web and mobile logbook for medical education. Trainees record cases, procedures and reflections in a few taps, straight after the work. Supervisors review and sign off from their phones, and programme directors follow progress against the curriculum in live dashboards and reports.

  1. Trainee web and mobile app
  2. Supervisor sign off workflow
  3. Curriculum and competency rules
  4. Dashboards and reports
  5. Secure sign in and access control

How we worked

The decision that made the difference.

We worked with programme directors, supervisors and trainees from the first week, and tested each release with a small group of real trainees before wider rollout. Releases came every two weeks, so the people using the platform shaped it as it grew.

Results

What changed.

  • Entries recorded at the point of work, not weeks later
  • Supervisors sign off from their phone in moments
  • Programme directors see progress against the curriculum in real time
  • One platform for every specialty, set up by configuration

Trainees spend less time on paperwork, supervisors sign off faster, and programmes can see early who needs support.
